A Promise to the Leaves;

For A Promise to the Leaves on the Wynyard steps, Griffiths reworks a handkerchief pattern. He has replaced traditional motifs with the silhouettes of leaves and nuts from the eucalyptus. The pattern is coloured with a 1950s Australiana palette and designed to create the three-dimensional optical effect of folded fabric. Simultaneously, it references the bandana code of gay culture from the 1970s and 1980s, when their colour and placement were a declaration of sexual identity.

Exhibited at Wynyard Station, Brookfield Place, Sydney as part of exhibition A Thousand Beautiful Things curated by Dr. Liz Bradshaw.
